The Supremacy of Christ
I wanted to share with you some thoughts that have been on my mind lately regarding one of the most formative pastor-theologians in my life, John Piper. While many may know him as a theologian, public speaker, or author, I was blessed to have the opportunity to get to know him on a more intimate level as one of my mentors and professors when I attended Bethlehem Seminary, the school that he founded in Minneapolis.
One of the things that have stayed with me from my time there is the mission statement for his life and for his church: "We exist to spread a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ." As I learned the meaning behind this statement, it has become a part of who I am as a Christian. In fact, I even prayed and toiled over the idea of just making our church's mission statement this, as many churches have (It’s a good one)!
Although I ultimately decided not to go with this mission statement, it is the bedrock upon which everything is laid in my understanding of theology and the church - that God is to be glorified in all things and that we as people find our greatest satisfaction in Him. Below is a video one of my classmates put together that gives the essence of what it means to glorify God. If you have time in the week, I’d love for you to enjoy this “sermon jam” with me as we pray about cultivating the type of passion for Christ’s glory we want to see in our church and on the island of Guam.
